Global Warming and Climate Change Movies
Endorsed by Sioux Falls Scientists

Sioux Falls Scientists recommends the following documentaries that describe global warming and climate change. The movies move from the initial recognition that there is a problem, to the specific and detailed evidence of the problem, to where we stand and what we must do to fix the problem.

The most interesting of these movies deal with the record of earth's recent past locked away in the glaciers on Greenland and in the glaciers on Antarctica. Deep ice cores taken from these locations have traces of the earth's atmosphere locked away in very small bubbles of air captured in the ice itself when it was first formed. This ice gets buried by each following year's snowfall. Greenland's ice cores go back 120,000 years and Antarctica's ice cores go back 800,000 years. Using sensitive instruments the composition of the air in the air bubbles can determined with great accuracy. It's using this history, just like we can use tree rings to know the climate history in the United States for the last 8,000 years, we can use the ice core air bubble data to know the concentration of various gases in earth's atmosphere going back 100's of 1000's of years. It's by using this data that we know that earth's atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide did not exceed 280 parts per million (ppm) for at least the last 400,000 years, until 1860 when it exceeded that concentration and is now up at 400 ppm. What happened in 1860 different than compared to what happened in the previous 400,000 years? Humans started the industrial revolution.

The movies are all available from Amazon.com but you are free to obtain them from many other sources. Amazon offers them on their website along with many alternate sources, often less expensive. Many are probably also available on NetFlix.com and elsewhere for on-line viewing. You are free to choose whatever source you please. The movie links on the following pages point to the movie location at Amazon.
